Nämnden för offentlig upphandling (NOU) tar strid mot den svenska matnationalismen. Skolor som bara serverar svenskt kött bryter mot reglerna inom EU och sker ingen ändring riskerar Sverige att dras inför domstol, skriver DN. Själv äter jag inte kött och försöker bojkotta bidragsdopade och tullmursskyddade europeiska livsmedel så långt det går. Men visst är NOU:s krav ett vackert slag mot nationalchauvinismen på ett område där den fått härja fritt allt för länge.
Jag var på en debatt häromdagen där filmaren Maj Wechselman, som följt de så kallade mänskliga sköldarna i Irak, bland annat lovordade Baath-regimens sociala framsteg. Det är definitivt fel sätt att vara emot kriget, skulle nog filosofen Michael Walzer hävda:
”The right way to oppose the war is to argue that the present system of containment and control is working and can be made to work better. This means that we should acknowledge the awfulness of the Iraqi regime and the dangers it poses, and then aim to deal with those dangers through coercive measures short of war. But this isn’t a policy easy to defend, for we know exactly what coercive measures are necessary, and we also know how costly they are.” (New York Review of Books 13/3)
“The war against terror is not a conventional war in which one can assign well-defined targets for the US Air Force to hit. It is also not a police operation, such as fighting the mafia. It is something in between, and this calls for a different strategy. Hur kan man göra EU mer demokratiskt? Ledande EU-forskare menar att det inte behövs. EU:s institutioner är demokratiska eftersom de producerar resultat ”that is favorable to the median citizen”, hävdar Andrew Moravcsik.
Giandomenico Majone hävdar att EU:s uppgift är att öka effektiviteten — i sig ett tillräckligt skäl för att legitimera att makt överlåts på icke-majoritära institutioner (ECSA Review 13:2).
Nytta och effektivitet är säkert fint, men det har inget med demokrati att göra. Vad hände med principen om de styrdas samtycke?
